Masters of Their DomainThe scramble for insulting Websites.Last winter, Chase Manhattan bought IHateChase.com, ChaseStinks.com, ChaseSucks.com, and, to be safe, ChaseBlows.com. This spring, the owners of www.Priceline.com, a Website for discount airline tickets, registered PricelineSucks.com (and Priceline-sucks.com) three days before the site actually launched. All these companies are trying to avoid the fate of Bally, a nationwide health-club chain. Andrew Faber, a California photographer, launched his BallySucks site (www.compupix.com/ballysucks) after a dispute with the club last year. The site posts complaints from other Bally members and instructions on outsmarting the club's finance department. And though his original dispute was resolved, the site remains. "By the time I settled, there had been so many complaints registered in the guest book that the Website served a higher purpose," Faber says. In February, Bally filed suit against Faber, whose site uses the company's logo. "We're not trying to shut down the site," insists vice-president David Southern, who says Bally has contacted many of the sites' correspondents to address their complaints. "We're trying to stop an inappropriate use of our trademark."
