CHILDREN FIRST--BOYCOTT ABERCROMBIE & FITCH
Games such as Strip Yahtzee, Dirty Scrabble and Naked Twister. Provocative
images of naked teens. Does this sound like appropriate material for a holiday
clothing catalog? A catalog that targets preteens, teens and young adults as
customers?
Abercrombie & Fitch is at it again. Last summer they celebrated binge
drinking. Now they are contradicting the conventional wisdom of parents and
child advocates who know that any discussion about sex should include the
importance of responsibility, maturity, being in love and safe practices.
The fact is that more than half of all new AIDS infection comes in those age
15 to 19. The rate of unwanted pregnancies is still very high. And after ten
years, rape is the only violent crime that has increased. Rape committed by
boys age 14 and under has never been higher. Multiple messages in the media
through violent video games, movies, etc. send confusing messages to young
people about sexuality.
Every parent and young adult should be outraged at the irresponsible marketing
strategies employed by Abercrombie & Fitch. They are manipulating young
people under the guise of being hip--They only care about selling clothes to
make a profit.
The rights of children should override the quest for profits by corporations.
We, parents from Brookline, Mass., expect retailers that target young people
as customers to use responsible marketing.
We urge you to boycott Abercrombie & Fitch this holiday season.
